Around 1990 cities throughout Japan began decorating their manhole covers
with designs that reflect some unique aspect of that city.
It may be birds or flowers or a favorite temple or geographical landmark
that is meaningful to the residents of that area.
I was touched by the sentiment that transformed these unlikely objects
into poetic images.
I decided to use them as the subject of my fabric designs.
I used natural shades of different colors and natural fabrics
such as linen, cotton and silk to create an elegant Japanese atmosphere.
KATAZOME is a traditional Japanese method of dyeing.
It begins with intricately cut paper stencils saturated with persimmon tannin.
A paste made from rice is then applied through the stencil onto the fabric.
After the paste has dried, the fabric is dyed with plants and pigment.
To dye memories of my journey through Japan's cities has become my lifework.
